About Enco

Our Story

Environmental and nature conservation Uganda (ENCO UGANDA) is a fully registered, not-for-profit community-based organisation located in Kiziranfumbi sub-county, Kikuube district, in western Uganda. Established with the mission to cnserve the environment while improving community livelihood, ENCO Uganda is operated with a deep commitment to addressing the pressing environmental challenges facing the region, particularly in Kikuube district. The organization's headquarters are located in Kiziranfumbi sub-county, and its work impacts surrounding communities.

Over the years, rapid population growth has led to increasing pressure on natural resources, resulting in severe environmental degration. Forest reserves and wetlands, once vital for rain formation and local biodiversity, have been extensively encroached upon. These ecosystems, crucial for maintaining a stable climate, regulating rainfall and supporting agricultural activities, have been increasingly destroyed to meet the growing demands of the population. This degradation has contributed to unpredicable rainfall patterns, leading to lower agricultural yields and worsening the livelihoods of people in the region, where the majority of the population relies on subsitence farming.

As agricultural productivity dwindled due to shifting rain patterns, the community's reliance on farming as a source of income forced many to encroach on protected areas such as forest reserves and wetlands. The desperate need for agricultural land led to the clearing of forests and draining of wetlands, further exacerbating environmental destruction. The loss of these critical ecosystems not only harmed the environment but also deepened poverty, as people struggled to produce enough food to sustain themselves.

In response to those challenges, Environmental and Nature Conservation Uganda was founded with the dual goal of promoting environmental conservation while simultaneously improving the livelihoods of local communities. The organisation operates on the principle that economic empowerment and environmental protection must go hand in hand. By addressing both issues, ENCO Uganda aims to break the vicious cycle of poverty and environmental destruction
